Yesterday I starting reading through Lifton again, looking for dates, and certainly the planning was pre-war, with major steps in 1939/1940 long before hospital beds was an issue. Lifton also makes it clear that the general notion of infection and contamination was important. It is a long time since I looked at any of this, but syphilis was probably one of the underlying fears and analogies used in ideas regarding the need for purification. In 1933 the Gesestz zur Verhutüng erbkranken Nachwuchses was enacted which set up genetic courts to determine sterilization. Six years later in september 1939 the decision to move from sterilization to extermination was simply a logical development of Nazi ideas.
I have been reading your blog for a while but I have never come across Kevin MacDonald type thinkers before this, Nicholas Wade's book seems to have provoked some pretty weird responses on all sides.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624586630299165335.post-85860434408785429212014-05-18T19:57:00.712+01:002014-05-18T19:57:00.712+01:00"His coverage of the American version of the ..."His coverage of the American version of the dysgenics movement is coruscating, and the path to German National Socialism clear. I'm still not convinced that culture is not the lion's share of difference between different groups of people, since culture has remain largely tied to ethnicity, which is a more fine-grained version of race. It doesn't take much to observe the different outcomes in a group as their culture changes, whether it's the transition from the Germans and Scots from fringe violent underachieving barbarians into core parts of what's now considered "white" or the difference in achievement one sees between Caribbean black immigrants and those with a background in America's South.

I think the politically correct mantra that all things are equal and the only reason why we have unequal outcomes is an unequal playing field or cheating is the result of a belief that if inequality were to exist that discrimination would be logically justified. This is absurd and, I think, easily answerable with the point that it's simply morally wrong for one person or group to dominate another.

"If Jewish advantage were purely cultural there would be little to prevent others from copying it."

This is nonsense because the traits that are most often associated with success are not easy to follow or copy, especially piecemeal. There are urges in human nature that often make it feel easier for people to do the wrong thing and those cultures that seem best at generating peace and success use a strong mix of social pressure and values to fight those urges and make people do the hard right thing instead of the easy wrong thing, whether that's holding one's emotions in check rather than letting them out or saving for the future instead of spending what you have when you get it. I've lived in Japan and enjoyed the benefits of Japanese culture, but I would never want to be Japanese in Japan because there is a tremendous amount of social pressure to behave in prescribed ways that often run counter to what the person wants to do for their own happiness. Similarly, there are white parents fleeing heavily Asian school districts because they don't want their children to be subjected to the academic competition and pressure that Asians subject their own children to. And this leads to a fundamental truth that many on the political left miss -- it's simply not easy to be successful, which is why most people aren't. That's why wealth gained through lottery or inheritance rather than being earned is so frequently squandered. Several points:
1. Wade’s 3 ma...A great review!

Several points:

1. Wade’s 3 major racial categories are a clear shocker to me. “Caucasians (Europeans and the peoples of the Near East and the Indian subcontinent), East Asians and Africans” is confusingly troublesome at best.

Why not 4 major races instead which are much more intuitive and clearer: Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid and Australoid?

And no, Indian subcontinent is not Caucasoid as Wade asserted. Except some islands of Northern India, the population there are by and large Australoid - Caucasoid mix, with a touch of Australoid-Mongoloid-Caucasoid mix, and could be generalized as "homogenous at the sub-continental level" - one can intuitively notice that when google up any random northern and southern street photos of India and Indian-subcontinent. And yes, Caucasoid also includes North Africa.

Yet this 4-race-architecture has an innate drawback, IMO, of causing many confusing questions and/or answers on average IQ.

Therefore from IQ point of view, a relatively “pure” 3-major-race architecture is perhaps better. Then I’d rather use “Europeans, East Asians and Sub-Sahara Africans” instead if Wade insists using the term "East Asian" ( I assume he means Han Chinese, Koreans, and Japanese, only). Relatively speaking, the rest are all mixed-race populations, which explains more clearly that why they have a quite mixed IQ levels and simultaneously exhibit multiple non-clearcut evidences belonging to 3-major-race depending on where and how to draw the line.

2. European Jews ( presumablely Ashkenazi) are not a race, neither in the level of “Caucasoid, Mongoloid, Negroid and Australoid”, nor in the level of “Europeans, East Asians and Sub-Sahara Africans”. They are a tiny sub-sub-race of Caucasoid, or could be considered as a mixed sub-sub-race under European category.

Any average IQ comparison of European Jews and 4 ( or 3) major races is therefore classical Apple-Orange. If one really wnats to compare at the sub-race level, one could logically expect that he could divide up 1.5 billion or so East Asians to allocate some sub races having higher average IQ than the European Jews.

Ashkenazis alleged highest average IQ (mainly by Murray, Cochran, Lynn - another PC taboo?) is in direct contradiction with Rushton’s 3-way theory, where as almost entirely Caucasoid Ashkenazis on average ought to have higher hormone level, higher aggressiveness, higher impulsivity, higher sociability, lower cautiousness, higher reproduction level, shorter gentation time, earlier motor/skeletal/dental maturation, lower mental health, smaller brain size, shorter live span, and lower intelligence level than the East Asians/Orientals in principle.

And no, neither Nobel Prize nor Confucius Prize can be served as a scientifically objective measure of anything. If the highest average weath/net worth can be served as the proof of highest IQ, then no race or tribe on earth is more intelligent than Mexican or Columbian drug-trafficking villagers.
Panda@Warnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624586630299165335.post-60254036883289816182014-05-17T12:13:24.820+01:002014-05-17T12:13:24.820+01:00Very respectable response. :-)

"The son of a Moscow merchant who'd grown up in a poor rural village plagued by recurring crop failures and food rationing, Vavilov was obsessed from an early age with ending famine in both his native Russia and the world."[7] He graduated from the Moscow Agricultural Institute in 1910 with a dissertation on snails as pests. From 1911 to 1912, he worked at the Bureau for Applied Botany and at the Bureau of Mycology and Phytopathology. From 1913 to 1914 he travelled in Europe and studied plant immunity, in collaboration with the British biologist William Bateson, who helped establish the science of genetics.
From 1924 to 1935 he was the director of the All-Union Institute of Agricultural Sciences at Leningrad. Impressed with the work of Canadian phytopathologist Margaret Newton on wheat stem rust, in 1930 he attempted to lure her to work at the institute,[8] offering a good salary and perks such as a camel caravan for her travel. She declined, but visited the institute in 1933 for three months to train 50 students in her research.
While developing his theory on the centres of origin of cultivated plants, Vavilov organized a series of botanical-agronomic expeditions, collected seeds from every corner of the globe, and created in Leningrad the world's largest collection of plant seeds.[9] This seedbank was diligently preserved even throughout the 28-month Siege of Leningrad, despite starvation; at least one of Nikolai's assistants starved to death surrounded by edible seeds.
"Hitler's army had already closed in on St. Petersburg (then Leningrad)—a desperate city that had lost more than 700,000 people to hunger and disease. The Soviets had ordered the evacuation of art from the Hermitage, convinced that Hitler had his sights set on the museum. They had done nothing, however, to safeguard the 250,000 accessions of seeds, roots, and fruits stored in the world's largest seed bank. So a group of scientists at the Vavilov Institute boxed up a cross section of seeds, moved them to the basement, and took shifts protecting them. Historical documents later revealed that Adolf Hitler had, in fact, established a commando unit to seize the seed bank, perhaps hoping to one day control the world's food supply. Although suffering from hunger, the seeds' caretakers refused to eat what they saw as their country's future. Indeed, by the end of the siege in the spring of 1944, nine of the institute's self-appointed seed guardians had died of starvation."[7]
Read more: http://www.answers.com/topic/nikolai-vavilov#ixzz31yD9O5Rp

It's mindboggling to think of how Lysenko ruined this heroic sub-culture, which could have done so much for so many.

Much like the current situation with Gould, Lewontin, Freud, Montagu, etc.RedZenGenoistnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624586630299165335.post-46402002252136543842014-05-17T11:31:43.074+01:002014-05-17T11:31:43.074+01:00Sorry, I should not have said Vavilov was Lamarcki...Sorry, I should not have said Vavilov was Lamarckist. That's why Lysenko had him imprisoned and killed for "anti-soviet science" after Lysenko was appointed by Stalin, just before Lysenko began his reign of terror over soviet biology.

Vavilov probably did more to stave off the soviet famines than any other human, and might have saved millions if Stalin hadn't given Lysenko power to murder his critics. Vavilov was establishing seed banks, and projects to get peasants to replace less productive strains of wheat, potatoes, etc with more productive ones, improving wheat strains with hybridisation. AFAICS, his work was purely hereditarian (as opposed to Lamarkian), and were by all accounts revolutionising Russian agri, until Lysensko had Vavilov imprisoned, and then hijacked the Vavilov infrastructure to coerce the same peasants to follow his Lysenko-Lamarkian "vernalization" madness.

I read 2-3 books about the Vavilov/Lysenko saga as a young teenager, and got all emo about poor Vavilov dying in prison, so I hope you'll permit this correction, it's IMHO important to not defame men like Vavilov unless the critique is true. I'm not aware of Vavilov ever promoting or implementing Lamarckism - I can't say it never happened, but I can't find any such record with google. Even if you can back your assertion, we should check whether it was after Lysenko's appointment, where I could imagine Vavilov trying to nominally "toe the line" and not get arrested and killed, similar to how men like Watson or Summers today panic and suddenly say party-line nonsense our of sheer terror for punishment by the Cathedral.

Vavilov didn't just get fired or embarrassed, like Watson... he was imprisoned and maliciously starved to death, after a life trying to alleviate famine. Lysenko was even considering going to Vavilov's family.

If you can support the claim that Vavilov was a Lamarckian, please do so - but I respectfully suggest that you're mistaken, and that old Vavilov deserves better.RedZenGenoistnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624586630299165335.post-18936928807919591212014-05-17T01:14:35.385+01:002014-05-17T01:14:35.385+01:00"master his own feelings . . . raise his inst..."master his own feelings . . . raise his instincts to the heights of consciousness . . . make them transparent . . . extend the wires of his will into hidden recesses, and thereby to raise himself to a new plane, to create a higher social biologic type, or, if you please, a superman...

Man will become immeasurably stronger, wiser and subtler . . . The connexion between Lysenko and blankslatism is an interesting one I’ve been thinking of.pseudoerasmushttp://pseudoerasmus.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4624586630299165335.post-46361460163609679202014-05-15T12:00:13.579+01:002014-05-15T12:00:13.579+01:00A few years ago I have a vague memory of reading a...A few years ago I have a vague memory of reading another NYT best-selling book, whose sub-title proclaimed it was covering similar ground to this volume.

That subtitle was, I think, "A Story of Race and Inheritance" but I cannot (ahem) recollect the author (presumably a biologist) or the main title (something about psychology and paternity, perhaps?) - maybe you could help me with this?...

Nonetheless, it clearly *must*, surely, have been making the same kind of arguments concerning ethnicity and genetics as does Mr Wade.
